Using the Status Panel

You can hover your cursor over each element of the status panel at the bottom of TenKey Tutor for information about each element's usage.  Some elements can be clicked to change how their data is displayed, as indicated in the descriptions below.

Tape On / Tape Off

This panel displays the current setting of the paper tape display.  You can click this panel to alternately turn the paper tape on/off.  When Off, the tape is inactive.  When ON, completed entries are displayed on the paper tape.

Mode: [mode identifier]

This element indicates the currently active learning mode.  (Example:   Mode: FlashKeys indicates TenKey Tutor is currently in the Touch Key Learning Mode.)

Strokes / Speed

This panel either displays the current (or last session) total keystrokes pressed during the session, or the gross keying rate (total strokes divided by length of the drilling session thus far.)  Simply click this element to toggle between the Strokes and Speed display.

Secs / Mins

This shows the time elapsed from the moment the first correct key was struck during a drill until the last key was struck in that drill.  During the drill, the Elapsed Timer in the tool bar will continue to tick, but the time in the Secs/Mins remains constant between keystrokes.  Thus, if a long pause occurs before a drill session is "officially" closed (by pressing the [Esc] key or the Finished flag), no penalty will accrue to the session score.  The stroke per minute rates are always computed using time only up to the last keystroke.

Rate

This is the net accuracy rate; i.e., the number of CORRECT keystrokes divided by the elapsed time to the last keystroke.  The number of correct strokes computed depends on the learning mode...

Touch Keying, Drill for Speed and Drill for Accuracy count any key pressed other than those highlighted or appearing in proper sequence on the data tape as an error.  This includes the [backspace] key.  The point is to find key positions accurately in these learning modes, not to correct errors.  If effective, error correction should become a rare thing and NOT something we want to practice.

Measure Skills and Use Calculator modes allow backspacing to correct errors.  After all, in the real world stuff happens.  When measuring skill, error correction is allowed.  Both the backspace and incorrect keystroke being corrected are removed from the total stroke count.  Thus the rate measured is the net accurate rate, exclusive of corrected errors.  Uncorrected errors still count as errors.  And, of course, the time taken to correct errors lowers the overall rate recorded for the skill test.

ErrCnt / Errors

This element provides either the total count of erroneous keystrokes during the drill session, or the equivalent gross error rate (total strokes / total errors).

NUM

This element shows the current status of the Num Lock key. The word "NUM" will be in normal font when Num Lock is on.  It will appear grayed out when the number lock is off.
