Statistical Typing
Statistical Typing is using numbers and letters together to enter numeric data. If the data input you are doing contains information like 65.3 mph, or 8.123 gal/hr or even just 23" or 1.5', you are doing Statistical Typing. Since the alpha characters are not on the tenkey pad, and using both the tenkey and the QWERTY keyboard is difficult and time consuming, Statistical Typing is usually done solely on the QWERTY keyboard.
TenKey Tutor is geared to allow you to select the type of training you need, but since we know that most of you learned to type years ago, TenKey Tutor doesn't spend time on the alpha characters. You know where those are. We refer to the technique of entering numeric data via the upper row of the QWERTY keyboard as "statistical typing,' and the numbers are what we concentrate on. If this is the area you need to work on, select the Statistical Typing item on the Options menu. This changes the training from the tenkey pad to the QWERTY keyboard right from the start, during the Learn Touch Keying mode, and you can continue on through the other Learning Modes on that keyboard.
TenKey installs with the tenkey pad active, i.e., the Statistical Typing menu option unchecked. We recommend you decide early on which area you need the most help in, and use the Statistical Typing menu option to select your choice. Concentrate there until you reach the desired level of proficiency, then use the Statistical Typing option again to switch to the other key pad. (After switching, start from Learning Mode 2 to learn the proper finger positions, and proceed as before through the other Learning Modes.)
To turn Statistical Typing on, click the Statistical Typing item on the Options menu when no check mark is showing beside this selection.
To turn Statistical Typing off, click the Statistical Typing item on the Options menu, when this selection is checked. If already cleared, Statistical Typing is currently off.
